When a mom and her teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right again before the big wedding. Freaky Friday, a new musical based on the celebrated novel by Mary Rodgers and the two hit Disney movies, is a hilarious and heartfelt update of an American classic in which a mother and daughter really see what it takes to be a family when they experience each other’s lives first-hand for just one freaky Friday.

With a score by the Pulitzer Prize-winning composers of Next to Normal and If/Then and a book from the writer of TV’s Friday Night Lights and Parenthood, Freaky Friday is a delightfully entertaining new musical for anyone with a perfectly imperfect family.

Reviews & Press

A hoot to see musical comedy… appeals to parents and kids alike!… The songs are catchy; the message has heart!… An avenue for laughter and letting go!
–Wendell Brock, Atlanta Journal Constitution

Simply a bundle of fun, with impressive showstoppers that bring down the house… this production is delightful, funny, heart-wrenching, and is a surprise must-see this season!
Sally Henry, The Broadway Ginger

The Horizon Theatre made a genius move in selecting this show to be apart of its season. Their audience spans generation which means some people would remember the book and movie from the 70s and others, like me, would remember the remake from 2003… Freaky Friday is an ensemble show, in every form of the word and I was living for these performances. I just must shout out this ensemble, it doesn’t get any better than this casting!
Marshall W. Mabry IV Review

There is a cast of stellar actor/singers… Ultimately, it is the relationship between Ms. Acker’s Katherine and Ms. Holland’s Ellie and the empathy that they necessarily forge that furnishes the emotional bonding that makes the audience smile… we root for them.
Manning Harris, Atlanta INtown

While there have been several stories and plays about exchanged personalities; this one is really upbeat and unique! It’s really fun in a place like Horizon where you are right up close to the players as if they were in your living room! The extraordinarily energetic cast stages 19 high intensity numbers… they swim into it with ease.
–Robert Heller, Atlanta Arts Scene Review

Get ready to massage your face cheeks after the show. You’re going to laugh, laugh some more, and laugh again. There may be a tear or two, but you’ll find yourself mostly surrendering to the fast-paced hilarity breezing by before you… It’s perfect for a group of friends, a mommy-and-me night, girls night out, a first date…pretty much anyone who likes to laugh will love this show!
Travis Taylor, wanderlustATLANTA

A comedic bunch of laughs that everyone in the family will enjoy!
–Serena Hale, God4bAndMe

Not having read the book or seen the movie, but understanding the premise, I’d anticipated something fairly predictable and goofy. Instead, I found solid acting and singing, fun and clever and apt music, and a fairly incisive grasp of the challenges and dynamics of parents and teens. By the end of the play I felt energized and absolutely smitten by all the characters. Truly I think the play will be a delight to anyone who’s ever been, or known, (or suffered) a parent or a teenager. I would recommend the play especially to working moms who have raised kids. Indeed, secretly, to anyone who’s had difficulty understanding, never mind having compassion for, that particularly annoying someone else.

I just wanted to reach out and thank you for presenting such a wonderful show. I absolutely loved Freaky Friday. It was a perfect show to see with my family. My favorite scene was when the girls swam in the fountain. It was so beautiful to see these girls love their appearances and their bodies — especially with my little sister sitting next to me. Thank you for being so kind and for keeping such exciting theatre alive in Atlanta!

I absolutely loved this play last night! I just want to tell you what a professional and talented organization you are. I was invited by a friend and went just to be with him, but I have to say, I was just enchanted by all of you. The choreography, music, sheer energy and youth, not to mention that each actor stayed true to character the entire time, the set – all were extraordinary. Thank you for filling up my very large need for the arts last night. I’ll be back!
