Mary Murfitt Kansas native Mary Murfitt conceived the music and lyrics for Cowgirls. An actor, singer, writer, and musician, Murfitt is also the co-creator of the Off-Broadway musical Oil City Symphony. Murfitt’s biggest compliment came in the form of a back-stage visit from one of the show’s influences, Dolly Parton, who said, “I’d play any of those cowgirls. If you don’t want to do the show some night, just tell me.” In addition to its long run Off-Broadway at the Minetta Lane Theatre, Cowgirls, has been produced at regional theatres around the country, including the Old Globe Theatre in California and the Caldwell Theatre in Florida.
