Writers

Glen Hansard & Markéta Irglova (Music & Lyrics) In 1983, at the tender age of 13, Glen Hansard quit school to begin busking on Dublin streets. 36 years later, he’s the award-winning actor and musician with his name on 16 albums and one-half the duo responsible for the music in the film and the musical Once, the only show to have music that won an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, an Olivier Award and a Tony Award. The other half of this talented team, Markéta Irglová, was born in the Czech Republic and started practicing music at seven years old and hasn’t stopped since. She has won many awards including the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Music (2014). The two writers met in 2004 in her home town when her father, who had invited Hansard’s band The Frames to perform at a music festival, hosted a welcoming party for them, and Hansard brought teenage Markéta on stage to sing one of his songs with him. He became her musical mentor, and they have since collaborated as friends, bandmates, actors, and lyricists. They wrote the music for and co-starred in the movie Once and formed a band and toured the world together as The Swell Season. Glen is recording and touring worldwide with The Frames, and Markéta is recording and performing from her home in Iceland with her husband and three children.

Enda Walsh (Playwright) Enda Walsh’s adaptation of the film Once opened Off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop in 2011 and moved to Broadway the following year, going on to receive 11 Tony nominations and win eight awards, including Best Musical and Best Book of a Musical. He is an acclaimed Irish playwright, screenwriter and director living in London. His work has been translated into 20 languages. He is the author of five Edinburgh Festival Fringe First Award-winning plays, including Penelope, The Walworth Farce and The New Electric Ballroom. All three of these were originally produced by Druid Theatre Company of Galway, Ireland and went on to be produced internationally. He has also written for the screen, and his Hunger about an IRA hunger striker, won the Camera d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. His recent work includes the opera The Last Hotel and the musical, Lazarus, with David Bowie, both of which played in New York and London. His 2019 sold-out off-Broadway hit Sing Street, a musical adaptation of the 2016 film by Once film-maker John Carney, will transfer to Broadway in March.

Horizon’s Musical ONCE Totally Rocks, Here’s Why

Feb 11 | by Bert Osborne for the AJC

“The deceptively simple and straightforward story involves a struggling Dublin street singer, whose chance encounter with a Czech woman leads to a whirlwind relationship, if not exactly a conventional romance…”

‘Once’ String Together a Melody of Heart and Community

Feb 11 | by Joel Lerner for the Emory Wheel

“Doubt often creeps in as we make decisions in our daily lives. In Enda Walsh’s musical “Once,” uncertainty plagues vacuum repairman Guy (Chase Peacock) as he contemplates his passion for music and his vision for his future. With the help of a lovable, charismatic cast of musicians, “Once” will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on audiences…”
