ABOUT THE PLAY:
Art Basel is about to begin in Miami, and Mariana, the director of a swanky modern art gallery, has a serious problem on her hands. Her showroom is an active crime scene. And when Mariana’s larger-than-life movie-star mother shows up, stealing the spotlight yet again, things get even more complicado. Part caper comedy, part telenovela, a fast-paced, joyous story of art and success, mothers and daughters.
CHARACTER BREAKDOWN AND INFORMATION:
ON CODE-SWITCHING: The play is primarily in English But all characters except JENNY, are bilingual in Spanish and English and code switch throughout the play affecting their dialect, style, and vocabulary based on who they are speaking to. “For example,” writes the playwright, “anyone speaking to Jenny will unconsciously sound what we might understand as less-Hispanic. Similarly, when Mari speaks on the phone to her clients, her Miami dialect drops completely. These characters never do it for comedic effect, it’s simply the way they live. (But I hope, at times, we can find it funny.)”
ON STYLE (From the playwright): Everyone should always be a moment away from dancing. On design: These characters are a piece of fine art in their own right. Think luxury like The Carters’ APES**T video and whimsy like the aesthetic of Wes Anderson. Things are vibrant. Distinctly Miami. Color is important: the intentionality of it should pull us out of realism.
MARIANA (Mari) Female. Half Colombian/Half Jewish. Late 20s. Born in Miami. The ambitious Director of Studio Six, an art gallery, currently preparing for Art Basel. The daughter of Estella, a movie star and oft-absent mother, Mari has chosen to forge her own path selling art. Reconnects with Jenny, an ex-fling and her mother’s newest assistant, when Estella makes a surprise visit to Miami.
CAROLINA. (Caro) Female. Cuban-American. Late 20s. Born in Miami. A passionate, unconventional and optimistic painter, and an intern at Studio Six. She is currently pursuing her MFA; her most recent series of paintings is called “Puertas: Doors of Cuba” which she hopes will catalyze her success. She is dating Juan, a Miami-Dade police officer, and recently found out that they are expecting.
JUAN. Male. Colombian. Late 20s. Born in Medellín but moved to Miami with his grandmother at a very young age. Miami-Dade police officer. CARO’S boyfriend. Warm, goofy, easy-going.
ESTELLA. Female. Colombian. 50s (or mid 40s). Born in Medellín, lives in LA. A movie star and MARIANA’S mom, often absent. Charismatic, sense of humor. Visits Miami seeking help from her daughter at a time when both mother and daughter are in crisis.
JENNY. Female. Caucasian-American. Mid 20s. Born in Westchester, is now a vegan in LA pursuing a career as a screenwriter. ESTELLA’s assistant. Went to boarding school with Mari, where they shared a romantic connection.
We are also casting non-Equity apprentice actor/tech/understudies and understudies. If interested in this, please indicate on the online audition form.
Casting — General Information
- Horizon accepts headshots, resumes and video links from actors who are located in Atlanta or who have Atlanta housing.
- To submit your information for future casting, please fill out this AirTable Horizon General Audition Form and email casting@horizontheatre.com to alert us that you have submitted.
- We appreciate link(s) to any video of your stage work that you can provide – scenes or monologues. We prefer 3/4 or full body shot video so that we can see you in a theatrical context rather than a film context. You can also include a link to your reel, but any theatre video is better.
- We hold individual auditions for each show in our season which are publicized through AEA and Broadway World. The posting might refer to AEA actors specifically, but we always see both AEA and non-AEA actors for our mainstage shows. You are welcome to submit for any posting you see if there is a role or show that interests you.
- If you would like to be considered for a particular show, you should fill out the general audition form above and send an email indicating your interest to casting@horizontheatre.com, and we will do our best to call you in for that show. But we have a small staff, so if you see a posting about auditions and you have not heard from us, submit your information as indicated on the posting. If we expect a high volume of auditioners, the initial audition may be video only.
- Please note that Horizon Theatre Company does not offer local housing and therefore rarely uses out-of-town actors.
- Horizon is a professional theatre company that hires both Equity (SPT6 contract) and non-Equity actors for its mainstage shows. Family Series/Children’s Theatre shows are non-Equity only.
