Notes from our Artistic Director

We welcome back talented writer/director Tom Jones (Shakin’ the Mess Outta Misery) and composer William Hubbard with this story of three sisters during the last night in their childhood home which soared through a sold-out run at Horizon in 2006. Joining them again are two of the sistahs, the incomparable Bernardine Mitchell and Crystal Fox with new zest added by Amber Iman, a sistah who they watched grow up around Atlanta stages. It is a time of upheaval and change – Washington, DC in the late 1960s – and these sisters live in three different worlds. The eldest is a respected college professor, the middle an upper middle class housewife, the youngest an idealist and activist. They are back home for the third funeral in three years – first it was mama, then last year daddy and now it’s their brother, aVietnam soldier. Over one long night of wine, memories, fantasies and secrets, they laugh and fight and share their deepest fears and desires. There are wounds to be healed in this military family. But theirs is every family’s dilemma as we grow our thick skins of life’s complications. Confront or bury? Blame or forgive? Cherish or perish? Our modern lives split our families apart, drawn to far flung interests and opportunities. When parents and house are gone, what draws us together? What do we mean to each other and how will we be a family now? Who were we, who are we now and who do we want to be? Through song and story, the Bradshaw sisters share their journey with us, inspiring us to seek out our sistahs while we can and to wrestle with our dreams and our past to find the path to our future.
