Smart, hilarious, risqué and full of heart, Avenue Q is Broadway’s smash-hit Tony award winner for Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book and a worldwide sensation.  Horizon Theatre is back for an encore of Avenue Q, winner of 2011 Suzi Bass Awards for Outstanding Production of a Musical and 6 other Suzis Awards.   The neighbors are nice on Avenue Q, the only address you can afford when you’re fresh out of college, out of a job, or just trying to find your way in life. Princeton, Gary Coleman (yes, that one!), Christmas Eve and their newfound friends (played by talented actors and puppets) valiantly seek jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life.  Sesame Street meets The Simpsons in this upbeat musical for grown-ups – and special performances of a new PG-13 Edition.

Length & Content

Avenue Q: PG-13 Edition runs 2 hours 15 minutes. Recommended for ages 13+.

The Avenue Q authors created an adaptation that maintains the dramatic (and comedic) intention and integrity of the piece, while editing it to make it more appropriate for high school audiences. It also serves the greater message of the piece by allowing its themes to reach a wider audience. All strong language and onstage sexual situations are removed, but the characters still deal with grown-up and young adult problems.

Praise for the PG-13 Edition:
“The result [of the PG-13 Edition] is a show that is sweeter, but not at the cost of the mature themes it communicates. Relationships, commitment, racism, alternative lifestyles, homelessness, and the value of charity are all issues that high-schoolers will be dealing with when they graduate and move on into the real world.”—Cary Ginell, The Acorn

“This show is a show of their generation. They’re just thrilled.”—Kandiss Hernandez, teen theatre director

Is Avenue Q appropriate for kids?
“Adults love Avenue Q, but they seem a little, er, fuzzy on whether it’s appropriate for kids. We’ll try to clear that up. Avenue Q is great for teenagers because it’s all about real life. It may not be appropriate for young children because Avenue Q addresses issues like sex, drinking, and surfing the web for porn. It’s hard to say what exact age is right to see Avenue Q – parents should use their discretion based on the maturity level of their children. But we promise you this – if you DO bring your teenagers to Avenue Q, they’ll think you’re really cool.” – www.avenueq.com
